Bond, Gwenda -- The Woken Gods
The blurb-premise of this looked nifty -- the gods come back, and move
into palatial temples in what used to be Washington DC -- but it
turned out unsatisfying. First, it was unexpectedly a YA book. Teen
protagonists who are hyperaware of their dating lives. I think it's
probably a good instance of that genre, but it wasn't what I was up
for. Second, it felt like a sequel without being one: lots of
backstory packed in, and I felt the backstory was more interesting
than the book. Third, the protagonist got a cute lion-god pet and I
didn't care. Okay, it was a scary lion-god pet who wasn't cute at all,
props for that, but I still didn't care.
